What content makes sense on a keychain

A keychain is small, and size rules everything: the shorter the link, the bigger the modules and the better it reads. At 45 mm a side you have room for a short link (an Instagram profile, a website with no parameters, a phone number) but not for a long URL with tracking.

  • Contact: a tel: link or your digital business card. Perfect for freelancers and salespeople.
  • Social media: the direct profile, with no campaign parameters.
  • Home WiFi: the keychain stays by the router or gets handed to guests.
  • Pet or luggage tag: a link to a page with your phone number.
  • Wedding or event favor: the shared photo album.

Dimensions and durability

The ring hole is generated at 4.8 mm diameter, enough for the flat 20-25 mm rings sold everywhere. Leave at least 3 mm of material around the hole: that's the point that breaks when the keychain gets pulled hard.

For daily use, print in PETG instead of PLA. PLA is easier but becomes brittle and doesn't handle the heat of a car dashboard in summer well. With three perimeters and 25% infill the keychain holds up fine.

If the link doesn't fit with 1.5 mm modules, the tool will tell you. The fastest fix is a link shortener.
Frequently asked questions

Common questions

What's the minimum size for a QR keychain?

40 mm a side with a short link. Below that, modules drop under 1.5 mm and the code becomes unreliable, especially with older phone cameras.

Can I put text on both sides?

In this version the text goes on the same face as the code, below it. Modeling the back face would require printing with supports or splitting the piece, and would complicate the result a lot.

What ring do I need?

A flat ring 20 to 25 mm in diameter, the most common size. The generated hole is 4.8 mm.

Does it survive the dishwasher or the sun?

PETG does; PLA deforms above roughly 55°C, so it can warp in a car left in the sun. For heavy-use keychains, go with PETG.

Can I make several different keychains at once?

Right now one is generated at a time. Batch generation (say, 50 keychains with different links in one ZIP) is planned as a future feature.
