How to get the right link

The most common mistake is linking to the business listing: the customer lands on the map, has to hunt for the reviews button, and half of them give up along the way. What you want is the link that opens the review-writing box directly, with the stars already visible.

  1. Go to your Google Business Profile from Search or Google Maps, using the account that manages the business.
  2. Look for the Ask for reviews or Get more reviews option.
  3. Google gives you a short link shaped like g.page/r/…/review. That's the one to paste here.
  4. If you can't find it, search for your business on Maps, tap Share and copy the link: it works, though it opens the listing instead of the form.
Always test the link from a phone signed into a different Google account before printing. It should open the review box, not the listing.

Where to place the sign

The moment to ask for a review is when the customer is happy and free: paying, picking up an order, leaving. That's why the best spot is the counter, the register, or the pickup area, at hand height. In a hotel room it works better next to the door than on the nightstand.

What you can and can't do

  • Can: openly ask every customer for reviews, put up signs, mention it verbally.
  • Can: explain how to do it, especially for older customers.
  • Can't: offer discounts, gifts or freebies in exchange for a review. Google explicitly prohibits this and can remove reviews or penalize the listing.
  • Can't: screen customers by asking if they're happy first and only showing the QR code to satisfied ones. It's a punishable practice.
  • Can't: write your own reviews or ask people who were never customers to.
Frequently asked questions

Common questions

Does the QR code go straight to writing a review?

If you use the short 'Ask for reviews' link from your profile, yes: it opens the star-and-comment box. If you use Maps' share link, it opens the listing and you have to tap reviews.

How many extra reviews does a sign get?

It depends on the business, but the pattern holds: the deciding factor is location (where people pay) and the text ('Leave us a review' works better than just the Google logo).

Can I use the Google logo on the piece?

The Google logo is protected and its use has conditions. It's safest not to include it: text like 'LEAVE US A REVIEW' with a star in the center of the code does the same job with no risk.

Does this work for any business?

For any business with a Google Maps listing: restaurants, salons, repair shops, clinics, stores, rentals.

What if I get a negative review?

Always respond, politely and without arguing. A well-handled reply to a negative review builds more trust with readers than twenty five-star reviews.
