How a WiFi QR code works
There's no magic and no server in between: the code stores a piece of text in a standard format that phones have recognized for years. It looks like this:
WIFI:T:WPA;S:NetworkName;P:mypassword;;
When scanned, the operating system detects that format and offers to connect to the network. The password travels inside the code itself, which has an important consequence: anyone who photographs the sign can extract the password. That's why WiFi QR codes should always be used with the guest network, never with the main network where your computer, your NAS or your cameras live.

Best practices
- Use your router's guest network. Almost every home router and all professional ones have one.
- Pick a password that's easy to type in case someone can't scan: avoid unusual symbols.
- Add the network name to the embossed text: it helps anyone who has to connect by hand.
- Change it periodically if it's a business, and reprint the plaque: it costs about 40 minutes of printer time.
- Don't put it on the storefront or anywhere visible from the street.
Common questions
Is my password sent to any server?
No. The code is generated entirely in your browser with JavaScript. You can disconnect from the internet after the page loads and check that it still works.
Does it work with hidden networks?
Yes, check the 'hidden network' box. The code adds the H:true flag that tells the phone the network doesn't broadcast its name.
Does it work for a hotel's WiFi with a welcome page?
Only for the connection part. If your network forces users to accept terms in a browser (a captive portal), the QR code connects to the network but the user will still have to go through the portal.
Can I make one for WPA3?
Yes, pick WPA as the security type: the QR standard doesn't distinguish between WPA2 and WPA3, and modern devices negotiate the best one available.
What if my network has no password?
Choose 'No password' as the security type. The code will be generated with T:nopass.
What size should the WiFi plaque be?
70 mm if it goes next to the table or the router; 90-120 mm for a wall read from a meter or more away.
