How to create a QR code for Google Reviews

The right link, the right spot, and what Google's policies don't allow.

Reviews are the single biggest factor in someone choosing your business over the one next door. A well-placed QR code turns the intention ('I should leave them a review') into a twenty-second action.

The right link

There are two possible links, and the difference matters a lot:

  • The listing link (the one you get sharing from Maps): opens your business on the map. The customer has to find 'Write a review'. A fair number of people drop off along the way.
  • The direct review link (g.page/r/…/review): opens the star box right over your listing. This is the one you want.

How to get it

  1. Search for your business on Google using the account that manages it.
  2. In the profile panel, open Ask for reviews or Get more reviews.
  3. Copy the short link that appears.
  4. Paste it into the generator and check on your phone that it opens the review-writing box.
If the business has several locations, each one has its own link. Make sure you're copying the right location's.

Where to place the code

Location determines the result far more than design does. The three best moments are: paying, receiving the order, and leaving. Translated into locations: the register, the pickup counter, and the door.

In hospitality, a stand at the bar works very well, and on the table, leaving the reviews code on the bill tray. In hotels and rentals, by the door, on the way out.

What Google doesn't allow

  • Offering discounts, gifts or freebies in exchange for reviews.
  • Asking first if the customer is happy and only showing the code to satisfied ones ('review gating').
  • Writing your own reviews or ones from relatives who were never customers.
  • Buying reviews.

All of that can end with reviews removed or the listing penalized. A neutral sign visible to every customer is perfectly fine and, in the long run, more effective.

And if a negative review comes in

Always respond, within 48 hours, without arguing, and offering a solution. Readers pay far more attention to how a business responds than to the specific complaint. A business with 4.6 stars and thoughtful replies builds more trust than one with 5.0 and zero interaction.
